is the
second most visited cave in Brazil. It is world wide known and
compared to Lascaux in France and Altamira in Spain.
The Gruta Rei
do Mato has three large chambers with numerous stalactites, stalagmites
and rimstone dams. In the Room of the Rarities
there
are identical columns, parallel, formed by the calcium carbonate crystals
of calcite. These columns are more than 20 meters of height with only 30
centimetres of diameter.

is a lime stone cave
located on the road to Brasilia. Eight chambers with 880 meters long and 120
meters deep.
The stalactite formations are notable for their bizarre
shapes, resembling bells, shells, horses. In some places they take the
form of high travertine walls.
Researched by the danish paleontologist Peter Lund on early
eighteen hundreds it was the begining of the brazilian palentology. This cave is the largest in the State of Minas Gerais. |
